It’s naff right now! It’s so willingly contrived that it could never be a cool design. Like the mini it appeals but on a superficial level.
The design is not clever, it doesn’t break new ground. It is a masterclass in retro chic, but is that good design?
The Fiat Panda, which it is based on, is a far superior piece of design and a far better car. It ironically, is a far better tribute to the original “bambino” 500 than the new one is. It is a proper utilitarian car in the mould of the original mini, beetle, Renault 4, 2CV, and 500. A functional, clever piece of packaging design which does all that a peasant family could need of it at a price only marginally more than a motorcycle.
The new 500 is the same chassis but with far less room, over-styled interior and a cutesy, baby clothes body that makes girls go Ahhhhhh. Mind you having said all that, the Abarth version looks the bollox!

I agree, I cannot see what would possible make someone buy that thing, everything I have read about it says that the panda is a better car and cheaper too……and for around half the price you could buy yourself a Saab 9-5 Aero HOT version, 0-60 in around 7.5 seconds, 150 mph top speed and its not to bad on the insurance…..it`ll never be a design classic though!
